| By incorporating the Griset rolling mill
into the production process, The Miller Company is provided with expanded capacity with improved quality.
In 2-high mode, the mill
runs down cast bars to intermediate gauges. At heavy gauge, the metal
winds onto large diameter non-collapsible drums, avoiding the surface
damage associated with more conventional upcoiling methods. The use of
high volume mineral oil cooling allows for the optimum in bright, stain-free
surfaces, while automatic gauge control provides uniform thickness to
subsequent rolling operations.
In 4-high mode, the mill allows rolling to intermediate and finish
gauges down to .010 inches, providing redundancy for the Z-mill. The
Miller Company’s Z-mill, or Sendzimer Mill, uses microprocessor controls
to roll strip to a uniform gauge down to .003 inches thick. Precision
finish rolling brings strip to gauge and, in the case of rolled-to-temper
metal, generates the required strength levels. The percent reduction from
the annealed condition determines the mechanical properties of tensile
strength, yield strength, percent elongation and hardness-attributes that
are specified by our customers. Automatic gauge control allows adjustments
to be made up to 30 times per second as the strip is being rolled.
